Powell River & District Agricultural Association
History

The Powell River and District Agricultural Association was first established in the area in 1933. The paper mill had been operating since 1910, with the original townsite community built up around the mill. The Westview area, which is now the more densely populated area of Powell River, started being homesteaded in the early 1920’s with the first land divisions being parceled off into 160-acre lots . Additionally, many immigrants moved to town to work at the mill (the largest paper mill in the world at one time), and drawn by the warmer climates many choose to live in the outlying areas and set up farms and orchards. The original Agricultural Association organized a large and well attended Annual Fall Fair and built the Agricultural buildings on the sight known as the Paradise Valley Exhibition Grounds.

In 1970, the Agricultural association disbanded and went into a dormant stage for over 20 years. Just over ten years ago, a group reformed the association and it was reincorporated in 1994. Comprised now, of over 70 members, its primary mandate is to promote agriculture in the region of Powell River and the surrounding District. It is a non-profit organization with a non-commercial, community focus. Its members and volunteer board administer the Open Air Market and the annual Fall Fair which share the values and principles of the association. These values include education, raising awareness about the importance of farming, supporting local innovation and tradition, preserving vanishing, rural arts, skill sharing and the spirit of community. The Association is a sponsor of 4-H and also supports other community groups by providing space, a venue for fund-raising and volunteer opportunities.
